Calling Bands and Musicians to The Katrina Challenge!
What does “rock on!” mean to you? Music? Or something more? This Spring Break in New Orleans it can mean a lot more – and you’re invited to participate.
Katrina Corps – Spring Break ‘07 is a by-the-people, for-the-people grass-roots effort issuing the Katrina Challenge, calling 25,000 college students to come to New Orleans to gut 5,000 houses in 5 weeks so that 5,000 families can return home. These 5,000 houses represent HALF of those wait-listed for gutting (and gutting is the required first step before rebuilding).
How can you help? Gutting is dirty, back-breaking work. Students, operating in teams of 25, will spend their Spring Break gutting one house per day. In the evenings there has to be music and fun (because the next day there will be more houses to gut).
The students who volunteer their vacations to do this down and dirty work will be the stars. We want you to be there with them, not only to celebrate them with your music, but also for you to consider WORKING with them, side-by-side. Together we can start to fix New Orleans. If you haven’t seen Bono’s music video “The Saints are Coming” — do it now. We’re not waiting any longer to do what could have been done and still must be done.
We know from research that young people today believe the only way to have power is through celebrity or $$$. You and your music can help them unleash their power to change everything and anything they put their hearts into, starting with New Orleans. This is a zero-budget effort. We don’t expect to put on “concerts” with full theatrics…but shows that are jams to share your raw talent and energy with the Katrina Corps teams. We’ll find a place for you to put up a stage and lighting…but until a partner steps up, we can’t promise more until we’ve had time to get the word out.
Corporate America can’t move this fast. But you can, and so can we.

Consider The Rock, The Ripple, and The Shore: Throw a rock into a lake, and it energizes change…the ripples move from the rock, carrying energy with them. The shore takes whatever comes its way. Katrina Corps — Spring Break ‘07, will bring enormous positive change to New Orleans, and energize more. We’re issuing The Katrina Challenge to bands and musicians everywhere.
