Description
Historical, beautiful, St. Vincent’s is in the heart of New Orleans. Located in the Garden District, just a 5 minute bus ride from the French Quarter and three blocks from the Convention Center, the Colonial Victorian building was built in 1861 as an orphanage founded by Margaret Haughery, the famous New Orleans philanthropist. St. Vincent’s is a testament to her unique life and it’s special history is recognized by the Historic Commission.
The decor is simple. It will be even simpler for the Katrina Corps Volunteers — the owner is helping us convert his living room, dining room and other common areas into dormitories. This way the cost can be brought down for every Volunteer. We’ll have internet access, though, and plenty of hot water for the additional Volunteer showers Ray Thomas and his friends are building under the direction of Mr. Taylor, St. Vincent’s superintendant.
Volunteers will be able to sit outside under the wide porches each morning for their “working breakfast” of juice, cereal, bagels, coffee, and tea. In the afternoons, before heading off to an evening in the French Quarter, you’ll be able to enjoy the landscaped courtyard and swimming pool. Free on-site parking will be provided for all Volunteers. Public Transportation is within a short walking distance. And, oh yes, St. Vincent’s is where Katrina Corps will be hosting free Community Band Jam Celebrations in honor of you, the first Katrina Corps Volunteers.

this place is a slum full of druggies, prostitutes and cockroaches. from wha i understand, they used katrinacorps to buid a bunch of beds, then kicked them to the curb. the owner is a schmuch, the manager a drugged-out schizophrenic. avoid this place at all costs; i just lef there after two weeks and have no clue how that place hasn’t been shut down. it’s a damned shame, too, if you read about its history
