The Lower 9th Ward today

We took these images of the lower 9th Ward this past Sunday. The 9th Ward is essentially the ground zero of Hurricane Katrina or rather the Levee Failure Magnifico!

Some houses are now gutted.

Gutted

Some are not and look the same as they did the day the waters receded.

Some have been bulldozed and some are just a pile of, well, house stuff.

This is where the levee failed North of N. Claiborne Ave at W. Jourdan Ave.

Amazing enough, some houses were still standing.

This house was under water. Note the tires and debris on the roof.

Maybe a boat. Maybe roofing or siding. Not sure, but it shouldn’t be there.

Not a whole lot of security going on for this warehouse.

This house is a different story. We suspect it was gutted and then the owners decided to take it down to the foundation while preserving the facade. Something about codes and house status and such….

All in all it was a very sobering experience 1 and 1/2 years later! But groups like Common Ground and Emergency Community among others are on the ground helping the community recover. They are the Saints on the Ground right NOW!
